The Nigerian educational system has been plagued by issues
such as accessibility to quality educational materials, lack of educators and
failing infrastructure for decades. In fact, in 2021, UNESCO stated that
Nigeria has more than 20 million out-of-school children, while those who are in
the classroom are learning from obsolete curricula, overcrowded classrooms, and
minimal digital incorporation. In this context, then, the development of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, QuillBot, and Grammarly, transformed the student
experience regarding not just obtaining knowledge, but also understanding,
processing, and producing it.
In a society where education was historically based on
memorization and standardized testing, the formal and informal deployment of AI
tools in schools unleashed what some educators and officials refer to as a
œquiet academic revolution. As mobile phone use went up to 89% and internet
access began to spread quickly in urban and semi-urban areas, secondary and
university students in Nigeria became some of the most important actors in this
process.
There can be no question about AI™s place in education
internationally. A 2023 McKinsey Report indicated that 40% of students in
developing countries were using, or at least familiar with, AI-based educational
apps or platforms. In Nigeria, this figure is increasing rapidly, with
university students in particular beginning to use generative AIs to assist
with research, assignments, and even studying for exams. Yet with the
acceptance of these tools came pertinent concerns of scholarship, originality,
and concerns of Nigeria™s education system to adapt.
This post unpacks how generative AI challenged
entrenched norms of learning in Nigeria, upending long-standing educational
norms, facilitating alternative forms of digital literacy, while also raising
problems of plagiarism and system preparedness.

1. The Rise of AI Tools in Nigerian Classrooms
Nigerian students have integrated AI tools such as ChatGPT,
QuillBot and Google Bard into their digital toolkits. Students began using
ChatGPT for everything from generating essays to explaining complicated
theories when it exploded in popularity in late 2022. QuillBot was utilized for
paraphrasing assignments, and Grammarly provided more immediate editing and
enhancing of written work
There were immediate benefits to these tools:
- Structured knowledge is available without costly textbooks.
- Quicker turnaround on assignments, particularly during
university strikes or e-learning shifts.
- Confidence for students who are weak in English,
particularly in the North, where problems of literacy continue to be a
challenge.
In 2023, a survey by EduTech Nigeria found that over 52% of
surveyed university students in Lagos and Abuja œconfessed to weekly use of AI
tools to accomplish some academic task.

2. Nigerian Academic Integrity in Question
These had twists as well. One particular university reported
an increase in plagiarism and the use of paid services for collaboration on
assignments when AI content became widely available.
University of Lagos and Ahmadu Bello University lecturers
reported that:
- An increase in identical essay submissions, often taken from
ChatGPT with slight modifications.
- Uncited facts or references that do not make sense.
- Students who cannot justify or defend the content of their
submissions in the oral reviews.

illusion of originality. Plagiarism detection software such as Turnitin was
unable to move quite as quickly or adapt, and frequently missed examples where
the syntax of the text had been altered by the AI. This breach of trust caused
concern for many institutions and an examination of academic honesty policies.

3. Digital Literacy or Digital Dependency?
In addition to providing a compelling case for the increased
implementation of AI tools, it further revealed a fundamental problem: many
students were not digitally literate but digitally reliant.
Rather than learning how to use AI by understanding its
limitations and questioning the results, students made blind assumptions based
on AI text. One common instance was prompt engineering for law, medicine, or
engineering assignments, fields where context and accuracy are determinative.
This over-reliance exposed a digital literacy gap:
- Students tended to have difficulty in verifying claims,
cross-referencing, or assessing the credibility of identified sources.
- Most were unable to tell apart AI-generated materials from
peer-reviewed research.
- There were virtually no tutorials or workshops on the
responsible use of AI.
Although the Nigerian government is promoting digital skills
through initiatives such as the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy
2020-2030, the actual implementation in public schools has been slow,
inconsistent, and focused on urban areas.

4. A Shift in Pedagogical Power
Nigerian schooling is characterized by rote learning,
copying notes, and studying for exams. AI countered this by making information
available instantly and on demand as well as providing it interactively.
No longer would students have to wait for brief office hours
or search libraries for old copies of texts. They could instead:
- Instruct ChatGPT to walk you through complicated
mathematical theories step by step.
- Edit writing in real-time with Grammarly.
- Use QuillBot to transform information into their voice.
It was the first time students had taken control of their
education, but the downside was that teachers began to feel disempowered,
obsolete, or ignored.
In ˜traditional™ classrooms, where teachers relied on
chalk-and-talk pedagogy, students began using AI tools as de facto tutors. It
also lowered the level of class participation, and it reinforced the disconnect
between a rapidly changing digital world and an educational system that wasn™t
changing.

5. Educators Struggling to Catch Up
Teachers not only were surprised “ they were ill-equipped.
The absence of training or policy recommendations meant
there was no foundation for teachers in Nigeria to begin integrating AI tools
into their instructional practices. As a 2023 survey from NUC (National
Universities Commission) shows:
- Federal universities™ lecturers as a whole had never used or
experimented with the use of AI-powered learning tools, 71%.
- A mere 22% of secondary school teachers in Lagos received
any training in digital pedagogy.
It left a gap where students were moving forward with the
help of AIs, while teachers were assessing them with obsolete metrics and
analog expectations. And a schism developed “ a digital divide along
generational lines that jeopardized the credibility of the classroom.

6. New Ethical Questions, No Clear Answers
Ambiguity regarding support versus œpicking it up from the
internet via the use of AI is an ethical grey area.
Students pose the questions:
- Is it considered cheating when ChatGPT provides a better
explanation than a lecturer?
- If I know what the ideas are, is it wrong to use QuillBot to
paraphrase?
- If they™re all using it, why shouldn™t I?
These questions remain open without the clarity of an
institution. Without explicit guidelines, also, AI-assisted academic dishonesty
is increasingly being normalized in Nigeria, particularly among digitally
literate and urban student populations.
Conclusion
The influence of early AI tools in changing the learning
culture in Nigeria is undeniable. They have democratised knowledge, set the stage for independent learning, and made œprepared in the classroom mean
something different. Yet, this digital leap has also highlighted systemic issues “ a lack of robustness in academic integrity, digital illiteracy, and a lack of preparedness among institutions.
With Nigeria™s education sector needing to catch up for this
tech-forward future, it must:
- Establish strong policies for the use of AI in schools and
universities.
- Prepare teachers to use AI tools appropriately and
ethically.
- Create programs for digital literacy that are critical
rather than simply instrumental.
- Instead, invest in AI-detection software and promote
original research work.
It is not simply ensuring we don™t fall behind
technological¦ It is also about maintaining the holiness of learning while
simultaneously adjusting how that occurs. As long as Nigeria strives for
integrity alongside innovation, instead of undermining education, AI will
transform it for the positive.
